Nonfiction about two brothers who grow up in a violent household and eventually take two very different paths.

Stretched Thin eBook Brady Nichols Brett Nichols

I've known Coach for almost twelve years. He somehow corralled me into this sport I'd never heard of, Cross Country, a seemingly incidental decision which later brought me considerable opportunities, and altered the very direction of my little, fourteen-year-old life. There are countless others with stories just like mine. When he told me he was writing a book, I wouldn’t say I was surprised - he’s an Artist, quite literally, a high-school Art teacher - but it’s safe to say that I was skeptical. As expertise goes, he’s first and foremost an educator, more specifically in the wild realms of drawing and printmaking, and in addition to this a pretty damn successful, high-school distance coach. Not a lot of writing, and we are living in the dark days of senseless self-publishing. This isn’t to say I wasn’t interested. Coach is like a father to me. If your figurative father writes a book, you read it. And, after reading it, I have to say, with conviction, that Stretched Thin easily exceeded all of my cagey expectations.

Stretched Thin, is an autobiographical, 'coming-of-age' story of two brothers. Each chapter is its own independent narrative, covering a vast array of childhood antics, like trick-or-treating on Halloween with an overzealous grandmother, or an innocent post-Easter egg toss gone wrong. These stories progress in timeline, and bounce back and forth between the first-person perspective of Brady (Coach), and the eighteen-month younger brother, Brett. Throughout almost every chapter, there’s a central element of youthful humor, an easy nostalgia which anybody with a high-strung sibling or a tired, overworked mother can relate to, however, from the very beginning, from the opening chapter ‘Irish Spring’, it becomes clear to the reader that these aren’t the everyday accounts of adorable little Kevin Arnold, or the free, easy, happy-go-lucky Beaver Cleaver. In Stretched Thin, humor is an outlet, a way to manage a shoddy hand, as the two brothers incorporate irony and satire as a means of coping with some of the more uncomfortable overtones of their upbringings. Where comedy can’t have its place, where the stakes are too raw, and absurdity would be too difficult, or awkward, the authors seamlessly inject insights that are both verifiable, and heartbreakingly wise beyond their years. Age-old concepts like, nature vs. nurture, or the unforeseeable power of choices, and the binding consequences that these choices have on both ourselves and those around us, are artistically explored, and woven together beautifully, as the two shamelessly expose themselves and, in turn, empower their readers. In the end, Stretched Thin isn’t a collection of funny retellings or random histories; it’s one heroic story, a painfully entertaining journey of two scenario-swapping protagonists, and their resilient mother, who each reach the same redemptive place, albeit at different times, and in very, very different ways.

I would recommend you to read it.

Stretched Thin eBook Brady Nichols Brett Nichols Reviews

Wonderful book. It is a great book to have both parents and teenagers read together.
Stretched Thin was a wonderful reminder of the "innocent years" of my own youth, the secrets behind some of our closed doors and the small town in which I grew up. (Actually next door to where these boys grew up.) A great read!! So very glad my friend "Gavin" in the book, suggested I read this nostalgic story.
This is a book of childhood memories and the impact of an abusive father had on the life trajectories of his two sons. Brothers, Brady and Brett, tell their stories. Each chapter is another tale that, on its own, conveys feeling, emotion and captures the vulnerabilities of children growing up in a challenging family dynamic. Together, the stories create a context for understanding the very different paths that each brother walked and how key moments in life (what someone did or said, or could have, but didn't) linger as important markers on our journey. The book is masterfully written. It made me reflect upon my own experiences as a child. It is appropriate for young adults and those of us that are not so young but love a great story. As an educator, I intend to share this story with staff and students. It exposes that subtle moments in life can make all of the difference, for better or worse. You cannot help but root for young Brady and Brett. As they grow and their destinies begin to take shape you wish for more. It is not just a book about hope and despair. It is also about resilience and redemption.
Wonderful book. Almost all families have issues. It is nice to know we are not alone. I know the people in this book. They represent all of us.
A powerful story of two brothers coming of age in small town America. Gives a good sense of their lives dealing with an abusive father and their will to grow despite the hardships. You will laugh and be angry and hope that they make. And they do!
This is a book of two brothers reflecting on their childhood memories as adults. Their collaborative effort to understand the very different paths each of them took while grappling with the impact of an abusive father balance by a loving mother and an artist grandmother. Brothers, Brady and Brett, tell their stories in a way that captures their remembered feelings of children vulnerable to the consequences life choices of adults. At the same time it describes their agency and coping strategies leading to the very different paths that each brother choose. Most of all its about reflecting on how early decisions influence future possibilities. This is a book that is very appropriate for young adults as an example of the resilience and redemption that can come with time, and the power of siblings, who are really the only ones who know where we have been and what it was like.
Written by two brothers in the form of short narrative sections, Stretched Thin is straightforward and readable, and dramatic in its account of the damage that family violence can do, and the redemptive effect that family solidarity can have in the face of that violence. Two little boys endure extreme abuse and violence by a crazed-when-drunk father, until his lunatic behavior removes him from the scene. The two brothers grow up, and one can see how their common history, combined with their different personalities, leads them in different directions one is always spoiling for a fight, always heading toward potential trouble, while the other does all he can to avoid it. When drugs enter the picture, the explosive effect is not hard to predict. And yet the love and loyalty between the two brothers, and among the other members of the family, has the effect of averting permanent disaster. One implicit point is the importance of families and friends not abandoning loved ones in prison, while they are inside or when they come out. I would strongly recommend this short book for young male readers.
